Getting A Pharmacy Technician Certification
Pharmacy technicians assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing health care and medications to patients. They must have a broad knowledge of pharmacy practice, and be skilled in the techniques required to order, stock, package, and prepare medications, but they do not need the advanced college education required of a licensed pharmacist.
Pharmacy technicians may perform many of the same duties as pharmacists, however, all of a technicians work must be checked by a pharmacist before medication can be dispensed to a patient. All the duties of pharmacy technicians have a need for absolute accuracy and precision in both the technical and clerical aspects of the job.
Pharmacy technicians training helps to work with licensed pharmacists to provide medication and other health care products to patients. Tasks they typically do include counting pills, verifying prescription information, mixing medication when needed and labeling bottles. The prescription is checked by a pharmacist before being released to a patient.
Other duties of a pharmacy tech include answering phones, preparing insurance claims for patients, stocking shelves, taking inventory and running cash registers. If the tech is working in a hospital or nursing home, he or she also must read patients’ charts and prepared the ordered medication (with a pharmacist checking the prescription for accuracy).
State rules and regulations as well as job-center policies and procedures may specifically define functions and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians. The pharmacy technician is accountable to the supervising pharmacist, who is legally responsible by virtue of state licensure for the care and safety of patients served by the pharmacy.
Individuals who meet all eligibility requirements and who successfully pass the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination may use the designation “CPhT” after their name. A certificate and wallet card will be sent to newly Certified Pharmacy Technicians approximately six to eight weeks after sitting for the examination. Certification is valid for two years.
The pharmacy technicians certification exam is currently offered continuously throughout the year. Applications are accepted every day, 24 hours a day, and approved exam candidates are given ninety (90) days of eligibility in which they must schedule an appointment for and take the exam. Great pharmacy technician salaies go to whoever works in retail or mail-order pharmacies have varying responsibilities, depending on State rules and regulations. Technicians receive written prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients, and may also receive prescriptions sent electronically from the doctors office. As well, these technicians verify that information on the prescription is complete and accurate, prepare the prescriptions by retrieving, counting, pouring, weighing, measuring, and sometimes mixing the medication.
Pharmacy technicians then prepare the prescription labels, select the type of prescription container, and affix the prescription and auxiliary labels to the container. Once the prescription is filled, technicians price and file the prescription, which must be checked by a pharmacist before it is given to the patient. Technicians may establish and maintain patient profiles, prepare insurance claim forms, and stock and take inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications.
